The Garden Room Flower Company

We are lucky enough to be surrounded by small independent businesses in Pangbourne and the surrounding area.  Over the coming weeks we will be shining the spotlight on different businesses and exploring all they have on offer.

This lovely independent florist is owned and run by Sarah, who lives in Pangbourne with her husband and children.  She is one the most creative people we have met.  We have worked with Sarah and attended a variety of courses including her Easter Flower School and Christmas Wreath Workshops, both of which were great fun.  We went to find out more about her and the gorgeous flowers, displays and workshops she runs.

What was your inspiration when starting your business?
Floristry has always been my passion. I had worked for a few
florists before and I felt it was about time that I run my own business where I could have full creative control and ideas.

What do you believe makes your business unique?
I put all my love into what I create and give a personal
service. Being workshop based gives me increased flexibility
and allows me to visit clients in their home or workplace for
consultations.

Describe a typical day?
A typical day involves unpacking the delivery, cutting and
conditioning the flowers, making and delivering bouquets, corporate displays and wedding flowers. Non flower tasks such as emails, accounts and clearing up also have to be done. I will also take orders and pre-order for the next delivery.

What do you enjoy most about running your own business?
I really enjoy being my own boss and having the business run how I want using my ideas. I work the hours that I need to and can be very flexible with all aspects of it which helps me have a good work/life balance.

What do you love about our local area?
Of course the beautiful surroundings! I am inspired constantly by the landscape and the amazing array of picturesque settings right on our doorstep. The villages are vibrant places to live and work and there is a real sense of community.

What is your background and where are you from?
I have always lived in the Reading area and have been in
Pangbourne now for 12 years. My business has been in
Goring for four years now. I studied floristry at the Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead and went on to work in a variety of florists across the Reading area.

Being half Norwegian I am very much inspired by Scandinavian culture and style. I absolutely love the rustic outdoors and simplicity of Nordic design. I will usually travel to Norway at least once or twice a year and I often use this time to seek out new ideas and explore new design techniques and styling.
